Dispatch rider of Speaker of Parliament’s advance convoy dies in road crash

Juaso (Ash), Aug. 06, GNA – One of the three dispatch riders of an advance convoy of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kinsford Bagbin, to the Upper West Region, has died in a road crash near Juaso in the Asante-Akim South Municipality.

The dispatch rider, identified as Chief Inspector Kaakyire Abednego, was said to have collided with a Nissan saloon car, which had overtaken a truck that had paved way for the convoy.

It then dragged the dispatch rider and his bike under the truck, which caught fire, killing the police officer instantly.

The timely intervention of fire fighters from the Konongo Fire Station prevented the truck from being burnt totally.

Two other casualties were rushed to the Juaso Government Hospital for treatment while the body of the deceased had been conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue in Accra for preservation.

Mr Mustapha Azure, the driver of the truck, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he had given way for the approaching convoy but the saloon car, which was behind, in an attempt to overtake him, collided with the dispatch rider.

The Asante-Akim Municipal Police Command has confirmed the accident but would not give any details.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Isaac Kojo Otsin, the Municipal Police Commander, declined to give further details on the grounds that his superiors at the regional and national levels must receive his report before he could speak to the media.

Mr Bagbin was not part of the convoy when the accident occurred.
