Police engages suspected armed robbers in gun battle

Tema, Aug 4, GNA – The Tema Police has engaged suspected armed robbers numbering about 12, wielding guns and machetes in a gun battle after the robbers opened fire on the Police personnel.

Chief Inspector Stella Dede Dzakpasu, Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Officer disclosed to the Ghana News Agency that on Wednesday July 28, 2021 at about 23:30 hours, the Kpone District Police Patrol Team received a distress call.

The message was to the effect that armed men numbering about 12 and wielding guns and machetes had blocked the inner perimeter of the Ghana Power Generating Company.

Chief Inspector Dzakpasu said the patrol team immediately responded to the distress call and on arrival at the scene were met with sporadic gunfire from the suspected robbery gang in an attempt to flee.

She added that the team, after carefully studying the directions of the gunshots, returned fire which hit a member of the gang, who was wielding a sharp machete while the other members succeeded to abscond.

The Police, she said, subsequently rushed the injured suspect to the Police Hospital for medical attention.

She said the Police have launched immediate investigations into the robbery attempt and security surveillance intensified to apprehend the rest of the armed robbers.

She appealed to the public to provide information to the Police on the activities of suspected criminals, with the assurance that informant’s identity would be totally confidentiality.
