Division One League Wrap: RTU, Gold Stars, and Accra Lions secure GPL promotion

Accra, July 26, GNA – With Inter Allies, Liberty Professionals, and Ebusua Dwarfs relegated from the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League (GPL), Real Tamale United (RTU), Gold Stars and Accra Lions will replace them in Ghana’s top division.

RTU who were relegated in the 2013/14 secured a miraculous comeback in the final after Bofoakwa Tano who had the best defence (24 goals conceded) in Zone 1 failed to secure all three points against Berekum Arsenal at the Golden City Park.

Despite being pegged on 65 points, RTU edged their counterparts, Bofoakwa Tano, on the head-to-head rule after beating them 2-0 at the home and securing a goalless draw game in the reverse fixture.

Accra Lions would feature in next season’s GPL after winning Zone Three which had the likes of Tema Youth, Vision FC, Hearts of Lions all vying for that precious spot.

It is the first time Accra Lions would feature in Ghana’s elite division with the club formed six years ago. They qualified to the league a fortnight ago after beating Danbort 3-1 in Accra.

Bibiani Gold Stars were the first side to secure promotion to the GPL after being crowned Champions of Zone Two with highly experienced gaffer Kwabena Amissah leading them to promotion.

It would be the first time the Bibiani-based side would be playing in the Premier League having won the league with 65 points while their top marksman Prince Owusu bagged an impressive 19 goals.
