Techiman (BE/R), July 15, GNA – Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister for Food and Agriculture has directed agriculture extension agents (AEAs) in the Bono East Region to actively organise farmers for agricultural best practices for increased and quality yields of farm produce.
Dr. Akoto gave the directive when he addressed officials and workers of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) at Techiman as part of his one-day working visit to the region, saying organisation of the farmers would create a platform of sharing ideas and methods about modern farming imparted to them by the AEAs for enhanced productivity and high financial returns.
One other advantage in organising the farmers, he stated would be the availability of a reliable database to enable the government to plan well to ensure adequate supply of their needs.
Dr. Akoto added the government had procured agro-machines from Brazil and India to help farmers to engage in large cultivation for the production of quality and quantity foodstuff for the country.
He said the region which is a transitional zone was endowed with many farming potentials and the government would therefore continue to provide farmers with the necessary support to produce abundantly to position the region as a food basket of the country.
Mrs Cecelia Kagya Agyemang, the Regional Director, MoFA announced the region had benefited from the Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development, and Rearing for Food and Jobs, stating that these government flagship programmes and others had immensely changed the lives people in the region.
