At least 35 people killed by armed gangs in Nigeria

Lagos, July 10, (dpa/GNA) – Armed gangs in northern Nigeria have killed at least 35 people, police said on Friday.

They carried out the attacks a day earlier, according to Zamfara state police spokesperson Mohammed Shehu.

Several other people were injured in five communities in Faru district, according to eyewitnesses.

The heavily armed assailants fired indiscriminately at residents, they said.

The background to the attacks was initially unclear, and it was not known whether the gunmen were members of Islamic fundamentalist group Boko Haram or local criminal gangs.

Former cattle herders who have formed criminal gangs operate in the area, terrorizing the local populace despite a heavy security presence.
