Kumasi, July 4, GNA – The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science Technology (KNUST) is collaborating with the authorities to investigate the circumstances leading to Sunday’s clash between students of two rival halls.
The confusion led to some students of the University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (Conti) sustaining minor injuries and treated at the KNUST Students’ Clinic.
The two rival halls, over the years, had clashed many times ostensibly over bragging rights and contest for supremacy.
“The SRC is appealing to the feuding factions to remain calm for peace to prevail as the University authorities probe the issue,” Master Samuel Sesah, the President, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi.
He said the incident had led to the temporary suspension of the vetting processes for aspirants in the SRC’s elections, which sparked the chaotic scenes at the Great Hall.
An argument over the eligibility and competency of some of the aspirants reportedly turned violent between students of the two rival halls, leading to a free-for-all fight.
“It is unfortunate things went the way we witnessed his morning,” Master Sesah said.
The SRC, he said, was working with the University Management and Security Unit to ensure sanity and order on the Campus and warned that students who intended to cause further confusion would be dealt with.
