Tel Aviv, July 1, (dpa/GNA) – In Israel, the number of newly registered coronavirus infections continues to rise despite the country’s high vaccination rate.
Some 307 people tested positive the previous day, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.
The last time more than 300 new infections were recorded in one day was at the beginning of April.
Most of the new infections are linked to the more aggressive Delta variant of the coronavirus, which was first detected in India. Many of those infected are younger people.
Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked has said she would order the closure of Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv again if new infections continue to rise.
The number of people seriously ill with Covid-19 rose only slightly to 29. No deaths related to the virus have been registered for about a week.
Israel is considered a model country in the fight against the coronavirus because of its successful vaccination campaign.
Out of a population of around 9.3 million, 5.6 million people have received the first vaccination, of which 5.2 million are fully vaccinated.
