Accra, June 30, GNA – Former President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the calm following the clash between the youth and security personnel at Ejura, on Tuesday, to be sustained, has urged the President to de-escalate the tension in the Ashanti Region town.
The former President in a statement said: “I add my voice to calls for calm following the shooting to death of two persons and the injury to many in Ejura today, following the murder of youth activist Ibrahim ‘Kaaka’ Mohammed.”
“I have just seen a video of the firing of live ammunition into a crowd by persons wearing military attire, after the burial of the murdered youth activist.”
Former President said: “I urgently call on President Nana Akufo-Addo to initiate an immediate de-escalation of the situation in Ejura”.
He said there must be a very thorough investigation of both the murder of the youth activist and the security rules of engagement, which resulted in the shooting to death of the two others.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the Ejura community,” the former President stated.
Two persons died, while four were injured when riot control security officers fired guns to disperse an irate youth.
The youth were protesting the beating of a social Kaaka, a social activist, which resulted in his death later at the hospital.
Three persons have since been arrested to aid the police investigations.
The incident has resulted in public outcry over the role of the military in crowd control and the need for security agencies to deploy safe but effective riot control mechanisms.
