Ve Agbome (V/R), June 26, GNA – Nneka Youth Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has held its 2021 Mega World Changers Camp at Ve-Agbome in the Afadzato South District of the Volta region.
The participants, mainly Junior High School students, were drawn from 20 districts in the Volta, Oti and Greater Accra regions.
Madam Cecilia Fiaka, Founder and Principal of the Foundation, said the camp was aimed at bringing the participants from various backgrounds to talk about issues concerning the youth; their goals, the choices they make as well as reproductive health concerns.
“This whole programme started in 2012 in the Ve Gbodome and its surrounding communities because we realised the youth were dropping out of school, taking to teenage pregnancy at an alarming rate and very young boys also taken to drugs.”
She said participants as part of the camp, had opportunities to engage in activities such as learning various crafts including paper arts, bags, beads and bracelets making.
The Founder said annually, the Foundation as part of its activities also organised Inter-District Reading and Spelling Bee Competition for students from the participating Districts.
Madam Fiaka said the Education Service was the Foundation’s biggest collaborators and made sure the children were enrolled into the camp from schools within their various Districts.
She said they also gave scholarship packages to students who were identified to have the potential to remain in school but lacked opportunity and supported them adding that over 300 students were being supported at various levels of education.
The Founder said aside from the camp organised yearly, they visited districts and also designed other educational programmes for the students including feting them.
Madam Fiaka said the Foundation had also designed programmes for girls out of school and young women known as vocational and Entrepreneurial Pathway, which gave them training in beads making and designing, batik designing, cassava flour and various crafts.
Mr Dei-Tutu Caesar, Chief Inspector of Schools, Afadzato South District Education Directorate commended Nneka Youth Foundation for the laudable initiative adding that “education is not only undertaken in the classroom. It also takes place outside the classroom.”
He said the participants would get information, knowledge and inculcate skills.
The Chief Inspector urged participants to serve as ambassadors with the knowledge and skills they have acquired with other learners to enable them to become leaders expected of them in the next future.
