Ashaiman, June 17, GNA – Nii Annag Adzor, Chief of Ashaiman, has charged the Forestry Commission to be proactive in protecting trees planted under the Green Ghana initiative of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He said the Forestry Commission should have initiated the Green Ghana Project but failed despite the government had taken the initiative to plant trees, the Commission should play a leading role in protecting the trees.
Nii Adzor told the Ghana News Agency at Ashaiman after participating in the tree planting exercise that the initiative should become a day-to-day activity of the Commission in collaboration with the citizens to enhance and sustain the country’s biodiversity.
“The Forestry Commission must make it their responsibility to regularly sensitize communities and lead them to plant more trees,” he said.
The Green Ghana project he said would ensure that Ghana’s environmental resources would not be depleted, stressing that trees were important for man’s survival, hence, the need to focus on continuous planting in the communities.
He charged the Commission to regularly undertake monitoring visit to ensure that the growths of the trees planted in the project.
The Ashaiman Chief urged Communities to form associations to consistently water, prune and shade the trees for the betterment of the environment.
He called on the Metropolitan Authorities to help remove shops from all the places reserved for the planting of trees in the Municipality.
“We want the streets of Accra to be green, I am calling on the authorities to help remove all shops that had occupied places reserved for the planting of trees,” he said.
