Kathmandu, June 16, (dpa/GNA) – At least three people have died in Nepal after monsoon-induced floods and landslides hit several parts of the country late Tuesday, officials said.
Nepalese Police spokesperson Basanta Bahadur Kunwar said that rescue teams have recovered three bodies – two in western Nepal and one in the country’s centre.
“Security forces have been working with locals to rescue affected households and relocate to safer places,” Kunwar told dpa.
The search is still on for seven people who are missing, according to Baburam Khanal, an administrator of the affected Sindhupalchok district.
More than three days of rainfall caused the Melamchi River to rise, sweeping away several houses and damaging bridges and road infrastructure in two municipalities north-east of Kathmandu.
“We have not been able to access the true extent of the damage,” Khanal told dpa.
Monsoon-induced disasters are common in Nepal owing to the country’s mountainous topography and dozens of big rivers.
