Moscow, June 9, (dpa/GNA) – Authorities in the Russian capital Moscow have decided to ramp up controls of coronavirus restriction as infection rates in the city are on the rise again.
In addition, new hospitals would be set up for coronavirus patients in the coming days, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin was quoted as saying by news agency Interfax on Wednesday.
Europe’s largest metropolis recorded over 4,100 new cases within 24 hours, according to the latest figures – the highest number seen since mid-January.
Daily new infections in all of Russia also hit another peak at 10,400, the highest caseload since mid-March.
Restrictions on public life in Moscow have mostly been lifted for months, with bars, restaurants and theatres open, for example.
From now on, however, checks on people wearing face masks on public transport and in shops, as well as whether companies comply with hygiene rules, will be intensified.
Sobyanin also once again tried to convince Moscow’s population of getting vaccinated against the coronavirus, something that many people are still refusing.
According to recent statistics, only about 12.5 per cent of the capital’s 12 million inhabitants have been inoculated against Covid-19.
