Hohoe MCE inspects meat processing in the Abbatoir

Hohoe (V/R), May 29, GNA – Mr Andrews Teddy Ofori, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has described meat processing and treatment in the Municipality as impressive after he paid an unannounced visit to the Hohoe abattoir.

He said there was the need for meat sold to the public to meet standardised hygienic conditions.

Mr Ofori, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the visit was to access first-hand information from the operators of the facility after its completion.

He said the Assembly took into consideration the needed additional facilities at the abattoir and would work on them.

The MCE said the Assembly planned to renovate the old abattoir into a meat shop, adding that “it is in our budget.”

Mr Ofori said a van would be procured for the transport of treated meat from the abattoir to the meat shop.

Mr Mohammed Awal, Secretary of Hohoe Butchers Association, told the GNA that the abattoir was the best concerning meat treatment in the region.

He said the Abbatoir lacked some facilities, including a lairage, septic tank, borehole and a good road network.

Mr Awal appealed to the Assembly to establish a livestock market within the Municipality to reduce the cost of travelling distances to purchase livestock.

He also appealed for maintenance works on the biogas system and the fence walls at the abattoir to enhance meat treatment.

The Secretary said the abattoir was opened to the public and urged them to utilise their services.
