Six persons, including two-year-old, perish in Nkawkaw-Atibie road accident

Nkawkaw (E/R), May 26, GNA – Six persons, including a two-year-old boy, perished in a motor accident on the Nkawkaw-Atibie road when the brakes of the vehicle they were traveling on failed and the vehicle ran into the barricade at the edge of the road, falling on its side.

The six were the driver, Fred Amakwah, aged 26, Ayim Godfred, 21, Kofi Adu Twum, 30, Enoch Ofosu, 30, Ramatu, 37, and Blebor Owusu, two years.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency, Police Sergeant Francis Gomado, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, said Ramatu and Blebor Owusu were pronounced dead soon on arrival at the hospital and their bodies had been deposited at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.

The remaining four sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Atibie Government Hospital for treatment but died later on.

Police Sergeant Gomado said on May 25 at about 1430 hours Fred Amankwah was in charge of the Rhino Truck, with registration number GW 5738-19, which was loaded with chairs, canopies and some spinning machines as well as nine passengers on board, from Forifori in the Afram Plains towards Accra.

On reaching a section of the road whilst descending the Kwahu Mountains near Nkawkaw, the driver alleged that the brakes failed upon several attempts to control the vehicle.

The vehicle had been towed to the Nkawkaw Central Police Station for examination.
