Ho, May 20, GNA – Mr Benjamin Komla Kpodo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho Central Constituency, in collaboration with Lifetime Wells Vision and Friends of the Eye, has organised an intensive eye screening exercise for his constituents.
The five-day exercise was aimed at correcting various forms of eye defects among the people and improve their vision so they could remain healthy and productive.
The people were also taking counselling on how best to take good care of their eyes.
Mr Kpodo, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the exercise was also to create awareness about eye conditions and the need for people to visit health facilities for regular checkups.
I want to assist my constituents to cultivate the habit of checking their eye, and also assist those who have challenges to be given attention,” he said, adding that “when we get the opportunity we will screen for other diseases.”
Mr Shepherd Tinab, an Ophthalmic Nurse and the Coordinator of the exercise, told GNA majority of the people screened had serious eye defects, including cataract and glaucoma.
He said old age, trauma among others were some of the causes of the defects and urged the people to ensure proper care of their eyes and avoid using traditional medications.

He said a total of 139 people were booked for surgical operation at the Ho Municipal Hospital, depending on their conditions to restore their sight.
Mr Tinab asked the citizens to protect their eyes and go for regular check-ups to have any problem detected and medically addressed.
Mr Mawunyo Agbe, the Assembly member for Ahoe-Duga Electoral Area, commended the MP for the exercise.
Mama Kumah II, Asafofia of Ho-Ahoe and Secretary to Asogli Queenmothers Association, said taking care of the health needs of the people, especially the eye was laudable.
