Tema, March 13, GNA –The Lorrenel Charity Organisation (LCO), an NGO, has embarked on Beach Sanitation and Public Education Advocacy to ensure that Ghana’s coastal zones are kept clean.
The LCO Beach Sanitation and Public Education Advocacy would also ensure that resident along the beaches undertake periodic clean-up exercises to maintain healthy environment.
Mr Julius Osei Adams, LCO Executive Director, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview after undertaking a clean-up and public education at the Glefe Community beach in Accra that the beaches were huge untapped financial entity.
He said: “Beaches are among the most attractive tourists site across the world, Ghana with a wide range of coastal zone needs to develop it, the first point is maintenance.
“Tourists wants clean beaches not unkempt ones; we must educate our people staying along the beaches to stop open defecation, and other unhealthy practices such as dumping of human waste”.
He said the LCO Beach Sanitation and Public Education Advocacy is being implemented under the SOSCV Ghana’s Solidarity Fund Project.
Mr Abraham Lincoln who facilitated the programme explained that, the LCO Beach Sanitation and Public Education Advocacy aimed at attitudinal change and transformation along the beaches.
“We are not only leading the people to undertake clean-up exercise, but we are empowering them to understand economic viability of the beaches which they can explore to change their financial fortune,” he said.
He said the Community Members decided to form Beach Watchdogs Group to prevent open defecation and indiscriminate disposal of refuse.
