New Abirem (E/R), March 10, GNA – Newmont Ghana’s Women and Allies Network has donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and sanitary supplies to three schools in the mining company’s catchment area to support the fight against the novel coronavirus disease.
The beneficiary schools included; Ntronang Presby School, Afosu D/A School and Mamanso Presby School, who received nose masks, paper towels, gallons of liquid handwashing soap and “Veronica” buckets.
Mr Derek Boateng, the Senior Manager, Sustainability and External Relations at the Akyem Mine, said the health and safety of the people was their major priority, hence the donation.
He said with the recent re-opening of schools, Newmont Ghana recognized the importance and safety of students and teachers which informed the provision of the items to enable them to comply with the government’s directives on COVID-19 safety protocols.
As the government continues to implement measures to control the spread of the coronavirus and reduce its impact, he said, Newmont would be committed to supporting schools, local government, health institutions and other stakeholders by directly addressing the health challenges in their catchment areas.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the beneficiary institutions, Mrs Rosemond Antwi, the Birim North District Director of Education, expressed gratitude to the Network for the supplies, saying the items would significantly contribute to ensuring safe behaviours in the community schools and prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
The Women and Allies Network is a Business Resource Group that empowers women within Newmont and its host communities by providing them with opportunities through education and advocacy.
The group previously donated medical supplies and equipment to nursing and expectant mothers at the Adausena Maternity Centre and New Abirem Government Hospital.
It also supported the Ntronang Presby School with books and computers through its ‘Read to inspire project’.
