SOY Africa undertakes beach clean-up exercise on Independence day

Busua (W/R), March 10, GNA – Solution Oriented Youth Africa (SOY Africa),a group of young Africans pioneering change in the area of sanitation and climate change have undertaken a clean-up exercise at the Busua beach in the Western Region.

The exercise was supported by the “Baba Future Leaders Foundation” which mobilised youth groups from Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast and transported them to the Busau beach to participate in the exercise.

The gesture forms part of the Foundation’s Monthly beach clean-up project as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and to help preserve the natural world for generations.

The four-hour exercise saw some members from the Busua community joining hands with the youth from SOY Africa to rid the beach of plastic and rubber waste littered around.

Additionally, members of SOY Africa embarked on a sensitisation drive through the Busua community to educate fishers and community members on the need to keep the beaches clean.

They specifically advised them to desist from indiscriminately littering and defecating at the beaches, stressing that it was important to protect the ocean and marine life.

Founder of the Baba Future Leaders Foundation, Mr Victor Beausoleil said it has been the practice of the Foundation to mobilise and organise youth led organisations from across Ghana to participate in a monthly beach clean-up.

He said the beaches and for that matter the seas were essential parts of human life and it was important to keep them clean, safe and hygienic.

He underscored the need for young leaders and community members to come together in some form of entrepreneurship collaboration to address the problem of sanitation along the beaches to preserve the ocean for the next generation.

He intimated that his Foundation would continue to mobilise and rope in more youth led organiations to clean the beaches of Ghana.

Mr Justice Gaduga, Executive Director of SOY Africa said climate change was a huge threat to humanity, hence the urgent need for pragmatic measures to be put in place to preserve the natural World.

According to him, more plastics were finding their way into the sea, a situation he described as worrying and could adversely affect marine and human life.

He said it was important to prevent plastics from entering the ocean to affect marine life saying that ‘Let us protect ourselves by protecting the ocean and marine life’.
