Online therapy dog receives British Order of Merit

London, Feb 19, (dpa/GNA) – A support dog called Max has receieved one of the highest honours conferred to animals for helping thousands of humans via online therapy.

Max, a 13-year-old English Springer Spaniel, was awarded the Order of Merit by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) on Friday, the first household pet to receive the award.

The medal was awarded “For providing comfort and support to thousands of people worldwide and promoting the positive contribution animals make to human lives,” PDSA said.
The Order of Merit is the animal counterpart to the Order of the British Empire, which is awarded to humans by the British monarchy.

“Congratulations to Max, who has been awarded the PDSA Order of Merit for his unwavering service to society as a virtual therapy dog!” the royal family wrote on Twitter.

Max belongs to Kerry Irving, who was left unable to walk and diagnosed with depression after a road accident. After meeting Max, Irving began sharing videos of his trips with his dog through the Lake District region on Facebook, receiving hundreds of requests of people to meet Max.

Irving decided to train Max as a therapy dog, and continued to send live footage to his followers throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“When I was at my lowest, Max became my reason to live and he continues to make me smile every day. Being able to share the support, comfort and joy that Max brings to thousands of people has been a privilege,” Irving said.

According to the PDSA statement, Max has met around 10,000 people and helped raise 300,000 pounds (420,457 dollars) in donations.

PDSA has awarded the Order of Merit to 32 dogs and horses since the award was created in 2014.
