Jewish leaders say pandemic has exacerbated anti-Semitism in Germany

Frankfurt, Jan. 26, (dpa/GNA) – Jewish community leaders say that the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated anti-Semitism in Germany.

“Corona has made everything worse, inhibitions are being lowered, attempts are being made to rewrite and downplay history,” said Pinchas Goldschmidt, president of the Conference of European Rabbis (CER).

“There is no question that, in this climate, Jews feel increasingly insecure, no longer dare to go out into the streets and isolate themselves – this is absolutely unacceptable,” Goldschmidt told dpa.

Ruediger Mahlo, representative of the German chapter of the Claims Conference, which seeks compensation and restitution for victims of Nazi persecution and their heirs, said it was important to prosecute people guilty of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.

Holocaust survivors are witnessing that “Holocaust denial and distortion as well as anti-Semitic attack have become increasingly rampant during the pandemic,” Mahlo said.
