Fresh attempt to relaunch peace talks for Syria to start in Geneva

Geneva, Jan. 25, (dpa/GNA) – The parties to the civil conflict in Syrian want to try again to get a little closer to peace under UN mediation.

Syrian government negotiators and opposition leaders are scheduled to meet in Geneva on Monday for the fifth round of talks on a new constitution.

UN envoy Geir Pedersen called on both sides to finally engage in constructive dialogue.

The political process so far has brought neither real change in Syria on the ground nor a real vision for the future, Pedersen criticized in the run-up to the talks.

The talks are considered an important building block in the peace process. The civil war in Syria has now lasted almost 10 years. Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced.
