US total coronavirus caseload nears 25 million

Washington, Jan. 24, (dpa/GNA) – Almost 25 million people have contracted the novel coronavirus in the United States since the beginning of the pandemic about a year ago, according to data by the Johns Hopkins University published on Sunday.

The number of deaths related to the virus rose to almost 417,500, according to the data, with 3,332 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours.

There were 172,650 new infections recorded on Saturday alone. The last record number of daily cases was seen on January 2, when 298,031 people contracted the virus in 24 hours.

The country of 330 million inhabitants has seen the largest number of infections and deaths worldwide in absolute terms.

Johns Hopkins University updates its data on a rolling basis.
