Death toll from Indonesia earthquake rises to 81

Jakarta, Jan. 18, (dpa/GNA) – The death toll from a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that shook Indonesia’s West Sulawesi province rose to 81 on Monday, the national disaster management agency said.

At least 70 of those killed in Friday’s quake were in the badly-hit provincial capital Mamuju, while the other 11 were in the neighbouring district of Majene, the agency said.

The disaster agency said some of the nearly 28,000 people staying in temporary shelters would receive coronavirus tests.

“We want to make sure that the displaced people don’t contract Covid-19,” agency chairman Doni Mornardo said, adding that young people would be separated from the elderly to prevent transmission.

The agency said on Sunday that more than 700 people were injured in the temblor.
