LAGOS, Jan. 15, (Xinhua/GNA) – Five people were killed and 16 others injured following a road accident along a busy expressway in southwest Nigeria on Wednesday, said local authorities in an update on Thursday.
The accident involved a bus that rammed into a truck from the rear while making a turning at the Danlitu community along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, one of the busiest in the country, said Ojuoro Olusola, Area Commander of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE).
Olusola said following a preliminary investigation, the accident was caused by over speeding and reckless driving.
The commander said that 21 people, comprising 14 males and seven females were involved in the accident.
According to him, five people died on the spot, while 16 others, consisting of 15 adults and one toddler sustained various degrees of injuries.
Bodies of the victims have been deposited at a morgue, said the official, adding the survivors were taken for treatment at a nearby hospital.
Olusola advised motorists to desist from speeding and reckless driving that could lead to unnecessary loss of lives and property.
Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads, and reckless driving.
