New Zealand to party, attend festivals as normal over New Year’s Eve

Wellington, Dec. 31, (dpa/GNA) – A number of large music festivals and fireworks shows are taking place across New Zealand as the country sees in the new year, in contrast to much of the rest of the world that faces restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With no community cases of Covid-19 in the country, events are going ahead as planned with no crowd limits or other health restrictions.

A light show will be projected on to landmarks in the country’s largest city Auckland, before a five-minute fireworks display at midnight.

One of the biggest New Year’s Eve events is the three-day music festival Rhythm and Vines, held near Gisborne.

The 20,000 revellers were surprised when director general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield, who fronted the nation daily during the country’s Covid-19 lockdown, appeared on the big screen with a remix of safety messages.

Auckland DJ Macsen wrote on Instagram that he had teamed up with Bloomfield to raise awareness about how the country could make “summer unstoppable”.

The music clip will be screened at festivals and events during New Zealand’s summer.
