FDA cautions public against buying unwholesome food items

Sunyani, Dec. 26, GNA – The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has advised the public to be cautious about unwholesome food items and products in the market this Christmas and New Year festivities.

It is necessary for consumers to open their eyes wide when buying anything, especially edible items to avoid consumption of unwholesome foods to contract diseases, Ms. Akua Amponsaa Owusu, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions Head of the FDA said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani.

She said consumers, during Christmas and new year festivities rushed to buy items without verifying the expiry dates, saying many consumers therefore bought expired goods and products “that are unwholesome and harmful for consumption”.

Ms Owusu stressed the need for the public not to check only the expiry dates, but the labeling languages and storage conditions of food items before making any purchase for health and safety purposes.

She emphasised for safety reasons, consumers must desist from buying products of suspicious packaging and also assist the FDA by reporting sellers of such products and goods for immediate action by the Authority in the interest of the public.

Ms. Owusu said despite the challenge of the Coronavirus this year, the Sunyani Office took necessary and safety measures to rid the market of unregistered and unwholesome products in the three regions.

Touching on the Authority’s efforts in support of government’s measures against spread of the COVID-19, she announced 39 hand sanitizers and four nose mask production companies that met the FDA registration standards were allowed to produce those items in the three regions.
