Accra, Dec. 14, GNA – Mr Theodore Mensah, Executive Director of the Virtuous Volunteers for Peaceful Elections Ghana,(VVOPE Ghana), has called on the youth to safeguard the peace of the country after the December polls.
He said young people who are the future leaders of the country had a duty to protect the continuous peace and stability of the country for the next generation saying that the future of every country lies in the hands of the youth, a major source of human capital and must be protected.
Mr Mensah made the call at the end of a five-hour peace walk in Accra to climax the activities of the year and also to sensitize the youth on the need to embrace peace and unity after the 2020 general elections.
The participants mostly youth bearing placards some of which reads Ghana is All we need, Let Peace Lead, Unite for Peace and Let us maintain peace to keep hope alive, started the walk from Mataheko through Dansoman, to Russia, Sukura through to Laterbiorkorshie, Radio Gold, ended at Odorkor Police Quarters.
Mr Mensah said as youth ‘we must arise to safeguard the future of our country’ and urged the electorate, political parties with grievances to channel the issues to the appropriate quarters and not resort to violence.
The Executive Director said election-related violence affects vulnerable groups such as women, children, the aged, the sick, and the physically challenged and should be avoided to build a peaceful, progressive, developed, and united nation.
Mr Mensah who is also the founder of the VVOPE Ghana appealed to the citizenry to put the country first in all their dealings to protect democratic governance and the rule of law to transform the economy.
‘‘We must endeavour to collaborate with the security agencies, the Electoral Commission and other stakeholders in the electoral process to uphold peace, unity, and stability in our country’’, Mr Mensah added.
There were other sporting activities such as soccer, tug-of peace, draught, ludo, and other indoor games.
