5,992 security personnel deployed in Eastern Region

Koforidua, Dec. 6, GNA – About 5,992 security personnel have been deployed across the 33 constituencies in the Eastern Region ahead of Monday’s polls.

The personnel are to ensure security and safety of the more than 1,634,166 eligible voters in the region, ahead of tomorrow’s elections.

They are made up of over 3,000 men and officers from the Ghana Police Service and the rest from the combined security agencies, including the Immigration, Fire, Customs and the Prisons Service.

Police Sergeant Francis Gomado, Deputy Regional Public Affairs Officer of the Police, who briefed the GNA, said over 8,091 flash points, were identified in the region and adequate measures had been put in place to avoid any violence.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Faith Amedzake said all was set for a credible polls on Monday as election materials and the needed logistics were ready in all the constituencies.

Ninety-three candidates, including 81 males and 12 females, would be on the parliamentary ballot papers to be voted for by the constituents to become Members of Parliament (MP) on the ticket of eight political parties across the 33 constituencies in the region.

The parties include the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Convention People’s Party (CPP), Liberty Party of Ghana (LPG), People’s National Convention (PNC), National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

The NPP and NDC are contesting all 33 seats, followed by GUM with eleven seats, CPP and LPG with three seats and the PNC, NDP and PPP with one seat each in Akropong, Afram Plains North and Fanteakwa North respectively, while seven are contesting as independent candidates at Akropong, Suhum, Kade, Fanteakwa South and North, Abuakwa North and Asene/Manso/Akroso constituencies.
