US sees second-highest daily coronavirus tally on Election Day

San Francisco, Nov. 5, (dpa/GNA) – The United States saw 91,530 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, as millions of Americans voted in the presidential election, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University, amounting to the nation’s second-highest daily total.

The near-record tally, published on Wednesday, comes as the country is seeing a surge in cases while President Donald Trump falsely claims that country is “rounding the turn.”
Public health experts are worried that as winter looms and people spend more time indoors the virus will spread more rapidly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, new cases are rising in 79 per cent of the US and average daily cases have increased 20 per cent over the past week.

The surge is particularly severe in Wisconsin and other northern states.

“We are in a crisis in this state,” said Andrea Palm, head of Wisconsin’s health department citing the state’s rising infection rates and dwindling hospital capacity.

The Trump administration has been under fire for its handling of the pandemic, which has infected more than 8.6 million people in the US and resulted in over 230,000 deaths.
