Athens, Oct. 14, (dpa/GNA) – A provisional shelter for refugees and asylum seekers on the Greek island of Lesbos was flooded on Tuesday following heavy rains for the second time within a week.
Pictures broadcast by Greek media showed tents flooded with mud and water, as well as containers ankle-deep in floodwater.
The island’s Kara Tepe camp, which was extended to accommodate more people after a fire devastated the island’s notoriously overcrowded Moria camp last month, was also flooded last week.
The Greek authorities and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have pledged to take measures to counter the worsening weather.
UNHCR says around 7,800 refugees and migrants are currently being accommodated at Kara Tepe. A working group from the EU Commission and Greek authorities is seeking a better solution to house the people.
