Accra, Sept. 17, GNA – The Municipal Education Oversight Committee of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly has visited some basic schools within the municipality to assess the current state of infrastructure.
The visit allowed the committee to acquaint itself with the level of educational infrastructure to enable the Assembly to take steps to address them.
Some of the schools visited included the Adabraka Presbyterian Basic School, Mantse Tackie Liberty Avenue Cluster of schools, St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Basis Schools and Amugi Boundary Road Cluster of Schools.
Some of the problems identified include the activities of squatters, who have taken over some portion of the schools compound, poor drainage, broken and weak walls, unavailability of gates, security, inadequate lightening system, lack of furniture, proper library, ICT laboratory and proper washrooms, among others.
In some of the schools, the team observed that classroom blocks started by previous governments were abandoned for more than six years.
Mr Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, Municipal Chief Executive, KOKMA said the tour was to take stock to enable the Assembly to initiate the process of refurbishment and bring the infrastructure up to acceptable levels.
He said the Assembly’s technical team went to the schools to ascertain the situation, but it was important for the committee to also have a wider picture for effective planning.
Mr Tawiah, who is also the Chairman of the Committee, said some of the school structures needed renovation works.
He said the Assembly had plans to renovate some of the structures.
“This is just the beginning but step by step it would be renovated for the children to study and teachers would find it comfortable to do their work.”
Mrs Joyce Osae-Apenteng, the Municipal Education Director, KOKMA said the students needed a conducive environment to learn.
She said the Municipality was a new one and that the Directorate was working with the committee to improve the educational infrastructure.
Mrs Osae-Apenteng urged stakeholders to assist in lifting the images of the schools.
