Accra, Sept. 11, GNA – The 2020 Professional Golfers Association (PGA) championship dubbed “Road to Damang 2020 Goldfields PGA Championship” is set to commence with qualification fixed for Monday, September 14.
Mr. Ahmed Padori, the Director of Operations for PGA, said the qualifiers scheduled to take place at five different courses was to select 32 professional golfers across the country to take part in the championship.
The three-day competition billed for November 25-28 at Damang in the Western Region would witness the final 32 battle for the ultimate prize.
In the previous editions, the PGA hosts over 50 athletes with invitation from Africa, however, Mr. Padori explained that, this year’s edition would take off with a qualification before the finals due to the Covid-19.
He said “The qualifiers will be used to select 24 regulars and 8 seniors making a total of 32 golfers to take part in the main championship. The number is reduced this year because of the Coronavirus.
According to him, the safety precautions laid down to fight the spread of the Covid-19 will be strictly adhered to during the qualifiers and the championship to ensure the safety of the participants.
The first qualifier will tee off on September 14 at Celebrity Golf Course, with the second on September 15 at the Tema Golf Club and Achimota Golf Club to host the final qualifiers on 15-16 whilst the qualifier in Kumasi begins on 18-19 September, with Western Region been the last.
The Tournament Director, Akwasi Prempeh, said 10 golfers out of 19 will be selected from the Achimota Golf club, nine from Tema and Celebrity Golf Club with Ashanti and Western Region producing five golfers each, and three Ghanaian based golfers in the UK to partake in the finals.
