Aboadze (W/R), Aug. 3, GNA – The Sustainable Engineering Solutions, METKA, the Business Unit of MYTILINEOS, a company operating in the Aboadze power enclave, has constructed a market and a haulage truck terminal for the Aboadze and Sofokrom communities.
The projects include a market at Aboadze in Sofokrom in the Shama District Assembly (SDA) of the Western Region.
The 200-square metre market for the Aboadze community has a sanitary facility, water storage tank and a parking area for trucks and can accommodate about 40 traders.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Aboadze Market, Ms Portia Asamoah who spoke on behalf of the Director of Mytilineos, Ms Gavriel Marianna explained that the company acknowledged local needs and decided to focus on the construction of a market for Aboadze.
According to her, among the requests presented by the community, the need for a community market was chosen because of its potential to promote the development of a sustainable economic environment.
She said the company aimed to improve on the social, environmental and educational activities in the host communities and to offer employment opportunities to the beneficiary communities.
She said the company’s goal was to return value to all communities where it operates, adding that in the past five years the company had implemented many Corporate Social Responsibility activities, based on the needs of the local communities.
The Operations Manager of the Company, Mr Mawuli Asempa said the Aboadze community market was an appropriate project because it would help ensure continuous economic activities in the community during the off-fishing seasons”, he pointed out.
He said MYTILINEOS was committed to playing a positive role in the broader community to promote human values and social integration, and to follow environmentally responsible practices in its business operations.
He said as a responsible and good corporate organization, MYTILINEOS ensured effective translation of the company’s mission into practise in line with accepted social values, which are exhibited in Tema and Aboadze.
The Chief of Aboadze, Nana Kobina Atom III, who chaired the occasion, asked the Shama District Assembly to ensure the roofing of the old market for traders who sell groceries.
The District Planning Officer, Alhaji Mahama Abu, said the market was a relief to the Assembly and urged the beneficiary community to make good use of it.
He also encouraged the operators and management of the market to visibly display the notice of ‘No face mask, no entry’ and place Veronica buckets at vantage points and to enhance social distancing protocol in the market to fight the spread of COVID-19.
METKA is currently working on the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a 192MW combined cycle power plant in Takoradi.
The plant would operate on both natural gas and light crude oil.
