Dabala (V/R), June 05, GNA – The National Road Safety Commission (NSRC) has relocated a taxi rank operating at the Dabala Junction in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region over safety fears.
The taxi rank operates close to the three-way-junction, which is a major intersection on the N1 international highway, with a regular stream of heavy-duty trucks.
Mr Kwesi Yirenkyi, Volta Regional Director of the NSRC told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) when he met the leadership of the taxi rank at the new site,that the relocation would help improve traffic flow.
He said it would also solve congestion, and make space for emergency stops and parking.
Mr Yirenkyi said the site, which was given out by the Ghana Highway Authority, was well situated, and spacious enough to host additional ranks, and also had some structures that could serve as offices.
He told GNA that through the collaborative efforts of the Ghana Highway Authority, the Police and other stakeholders, the NSRC was meeting its objective of keeping the highways safe, and was clearing all commercial activities out of the 20-meter free holds.
The Regional Director said the Commission was also establishing more duty posts in the Region, and sustained an extensive public education campaign to enhance performance indicators.
Mr Usif Amadu Rufai, Vice Chair of the over 40-member driver union that is operating the rank said working at the junction risked the lives of drivers and passengers.
He said the site would be made ready within days, and maintained to beautify the area.
Mr Rufai made an appeal to authorities to help check irresponsible road use by drivers, motorcyclists and traders.
Chief Superintendent Dennis Fiakpui, Divisional MTTD Commander, said the busy highway recorded accidents resulting from over speeding in less populated areas.
He added that criminal activities flourished along those stretches, causing drivers to speed, and said more resources would be needed in making travelling safer.
“Our area is burdened with accidents … Robbers use the cover of the bushes and vehicles speed up because of the robberies,” the Commander said.
