Yendi (N/R), May 21, GNA – The Ghana Agriculture Sector Investment Programme (GASIP) has presented tricycles and personal protective equipment (PPE) to 30 farmers from Gukpegu and Kushegu in the Yendi Municipality for undertaking conservation agriculture.
Twenty of the farmers from Gukpegu and 10 from Kushegu Municipality received the awards, with Kpatia also in the Yendi Municipality receiving the overall best award.
Some of the farmers received items including; PPE, Knapsack sprayers, and wellington boots.
Mr Klutse Kudomor, National Programme Coordinator of GASIP, whose address was read on his behalf at a ceremony to present the items to the farmers at Yendi, said GASIP was to enhance the profitability and climate resilience agribusinesses of farmers, especially smallholder farmers.
Mr Kudomor said as the cropping season starts, GASIP would support about 1,500 smallholder farmers in 12 districts including; Kintampo and Banda in the Bono East, Yendi, West Mamprusi, Kumbugu, Saboba, Kpandai in the Northern Region, Bolgatanga Municipal, Bongo, and Builsa South districts in the Upper East Region, Jirapa and Wa West in the Upper West Region with climate-resilient seeds and other inputs to enable them cultivate maximum of two acres each using various climate smart agriculture technologies and techniques.
He advised all farmers not to cultivate acreages that they could not manage and urged them to combine the three key principles of conservation agriculture together with other climate smart agricultural practices such as the use of climate-resilient seeds, and apply the right fertilizer at the right quantity amongst others.
He assured small holder farmers that GASIP was working with other value chain actors and linking them to buyers to ensure that they had market for their produce.
Alhaji Hammed Abubakari Yussif, Yendi Municipal Chief Executive commended GASIP for its interventions in the area, and urged the farmers to embrace best agronomic practices to ensure food security.
