Koforidua, May 20, GNA – Koforidua Agartha market is not observing the social distancing protocols set out to combat the spresad of the corona virus.
In addition, the market, which is a trading hub for foodstuffs brought from villages across the region for sale, has no handwashing facility.
Hundreds of people patronise there on market days which falls on Mondays and Thursdays.
Most of the people the GNA encountered on Thursday expressed worry over the situation and the risk it posed to the public in spreading the coronavirus.
Madam Yaa Afrah, a trader, told GNA that they do not have access to water or soap to wash their hands.
She said as for the social distancing, there was no space to observe it so they use the face masks instead.
Ms Afrah appealed for hand washing stations at the market to enable them to wash their hands frequently.
Madam Joyce Tiwa, a public servant, told GNA that the situation was worrying considering the fact that the region had recorded a number of confirmed cases.
She called on the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly to as a matter of urgency institute measures to reduce the congestion.
Few weeks ago, the Municipal Assembly decongested the central business area and the Koforidua Central Market but the exercise was not extended to the Koforidua Agartha Market.
