Adaklu-Kodzobi Assemblyman praised for addressing drivers-passengers impasse

Adaklu Kodzobi (V/R), May 18, GNA – Residents of Adaklu-Kodzobi Electoral Area in Volta Region are full of praises for Mr Samson Worlanyo Gakpo, Assemblyman for the area for resolving misunderstandings between drivers and passengers in the area.

Commercial drivers in the area were said to have unilaterally increased lorry fares from three Ghana Cedis to four Ghana Cedis though government has not announced increases in lorry fares.

According to one of the drivers, who identified himself only as Emmanuel, they were directed by a member of one of the security services to carry three passengers instead of the normal four in line with the social distancing directive and increased the fare to four Ghana Cedis.

The situation caused growing resentment between passengers and drivers, necessitating the intervention of the Assemblyman.

Mr Gakpo organized a meeting between the passengers and the drivers, where the drivers agreed to revert to the old fare.

The Assemblyman also took the opportunity to advise the drivers to ensure passengers wore nose masks when boarding vehicles.

Ms Mawunya Akpah, a trader, thanked the Assemblyman for his quick intervention and also commended the drivers for reverting to the old fare.

Mr Matthew Wormenor, an opinion leader of the area who was also present at the meeting appealed for consensus building among the drivers and passengers saying “you rely on each other for survival.”
