Abuakwa (Ash), May 13, GNA – The Abuakwa Polyclinic, in the Atwima-Nwiabigya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has received sanitary and personal protective equipment aimed at resourcing the staff in the fight against the COVID-19 (coronavirus) disease.
The items included a variety of nose masks, hand gloves and delivery gowns, adult and toddler weighing scales, Veronica buckets, dust bins, hand sanitizers, liquid soap and tissue papers.
The ‘Ghana Diaspora Women’, an international benevolent organization, donated the items to reinforce Ghana’s campaign to containing the pandemic, which had so far claimed 22 lives since the nation recorded her first two confirmed cases about two months ago.
A total of 5, 127 confirmed cases and 494 recoveries had been recorded in the country as of May 12, this year.
Madam Esther Ampadu-Asiamah, President of the Local Chapter of the Organization, making the donation on behalf of the Founder and Leader, Mrs. Marie Amoakwah-Boadu, at a ceremony at Abuakwa, cautioned the citizenry to be wary of the disease.
“Our lives are at risk in the face of the increasing spread of the pandemic,” she told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sideline of the programme.
She advised the people to observe social distancing, regular hand-washing with running water and the wearing of nose masks at all public places.
‘Ghana Diaspora Women’, she said, had over five hundred members in both Ghana and the diaspora, adding that they have over the years been assisting underprivileged communities to help improve their health and living conditions.
Madam Ampadu-Asiamah lauded frontline health workers for their resolve to fight to the end till a remedy for the pandemic was found.
Receiving the items, the Acting Medical Superintendent of Abuakwa Polyclinic, Dr. Nana Nketia Ababio, said the donation had come at the right time as it would ensure the safety of the health staff.
He said the facility’s Out-Patient-Department (OPD) and other infrastructure were currently under renovation in order to enhance the Polyclinic’s status of providing quality healthcare delivery.
The renovation is being financed from the facility’s internally-generated funds (IGF), he noted, and appealed to corporate organizations to endeavour to come to their aid.
The Acting Medical Superintendent called for collective responsibility in the fight against COVID-19.
