Apremdo fire outbreak kills two-year-old

Apremdo (WR), May 7, GNA – A fire outbreak near the Apremdo Market in the Kwesimintsin Municipality on Wednesday claimed the life of a two-year-old, whilst destroying about twelve container stalls.

The fire, which started around 1326 hours on Wednesday, took firemen some 20 minutes to extinguish it at about 1346 hours that same afternoon.

DOII Emmanuel Bonney, the Public Relations Officer of the Western Regional office of the Ghana National Fire Service, who confirmed the outbreak to the Ghana News Agency, said the actual cause of the blaze was yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, Police have taken the necessary on-site information and deposited the remains of the two-year-old at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for further actions.

According to Him, the fire started from some scattered container stalls before extending to a fuel tanker which was on standby at a Gas filling station near the Apremdo traffic light and thereby aggravating the extent of the damage.

He said the fire service was able to quench the blaze with six fire tenders sought from several stations, including Shama, Naval Base, and GPHA.

He said when eventually the fire was brought under control, 12 stalls, a mobile money shop, and a Vulcanising Bay had been razed down by the ravaging flames.

DOII Bonney, however, complained about the crowd that gathered around the scene, thereby interfering in their work.

He urged the public to always be wary of the effects of fire outbreaks and pave way for officials to execute their tasks on time.
