Burkinabe migrants nabbed in Ghana for breaching Presidential Order

Wa, (UW/R), May 6, GNA – The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), on Tuesday, arrested four Burkina Faso nationals, aged between 22 to 39 for breaching the Presidential order on the closure of the country’s national borders.

The migrants who are all males were arrested at the Babile inland checkpoint in the Lawra Municipality through regular vehicle patrols by the immigration officials.

Mr Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul-Mumin Seidu, the Upper West Regional Public Relations Officer for the GIS, revealed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa.

The illegal migrants were on-board a Hyundai Grace H300 mini bus with registration number AS 3289-11 to Wa and subsequently to Kumasi.

President Akufo-Addo ordered the closure of all the national borders as part of measures to help control the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in the country.

However, Mr Seidu said their preliminary investigations revealed that the Burkinabe nationals entered Ghana through an unapproved route within the Hamile Sector Command of the GIS.

He noted that their checks also indicated that they were traveling to the southern sector mainly for economic purposes.

The PRO said the arrested persons were taking through initial health screening at the checkpoint and carried to the Hamile Immigration Control for repatriation to their home country, Burkina Faso.

“We’re appealing to the border residents to be citizens and not spectators, particularly, in these unusual times. Whosoever is caught, aiding or facilitating the entry or exit of a person or group of persons would face the wrath of the law”, he said.

Mr Seidu also appealed to the public, particularly, the border residents and various stakeholders to support the security agencies in the discharge of their duties.
