Berekum (B/R), May 04, GNA – The Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional office of the National Youth Authority (NYA) has engaged 50 community volunteers to intensify public education on the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) to stem the spread of it in rural areas.
Already, the Authority in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has organised orientation workshops to train the volunteers on basic understanding, protection, and transmission of the COVID-19.
Mrs. Fati Bamba, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Director of the NYA in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Berekum on Monday, said each of the volunteers was working in either one or two rural communities.
The volunteers were provided with nose masks and sanitizers and they reached out to the communities to sensitize the people to get them abreast with the COVID-19.
They also encouraged them to adhere to social and physical distancing, wash their hands with soap under running water, and complied with all government restrictions on the COVID-19.
Mrs. Bamba reminded the youth on the need to acquire and wear nose masks, and avoid games and sporting activities which crowded them, to protect themselves and others around them from contracting the disease.
Mr. Johnson Yaw Adama, the Acting Berekum Municipal Coordinator of the NYA, expressed worry that most of the people in rural areas were not adhering to the social and physical distancing and other protocols about the COVID-19.
This, he noted was because of lack of education, saying the outreach education programmes being undertaken by the volunteers were making a significant impact on the lives of the rural dwellers.
Mr. Adama expressed the hope that the volunteers would be motivated enough to encourage them to do much to help prevent the spread of the disease.
