Ho, April 29, GNA – Pencils of Promise (PoP), a Non-Governmental Organisation with focus on education has supported the Volta and Oti Regional Education Directorates with 20 handwashing stations to help fight the spread of the COVID-19 disease.
Mr Freeman Gobah, Country Director, PoP, during the presentation said water storage and toilet facilities provided for schools it supported, must be made available for use by community members during the period.
Mr Gobah also said PoP had been undertaking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes in schools, training pupils on tippy tap construction, which he was sure were being replicated in homes.
“We would continue to monitor the situation and respond to calls for support”, he said.
Mrs Afi Amafugah, Volta Regional Director of Education said PoP had been a long partner of the Ghana Education Service, and was therefore “not surprised” at the gesture.
She acknowledged the online support the Organisation provided teachers and students as schools remained on lockdown, and appealed for more facemasks for staff.
Mrs Amafugah asked parents to help keep children safe by coaching them on the needed personal hygiene practices, adding that “we want everybody back to school healthy and at the appropriate time.”
Mr Raphael Bandim, Programmes Manager for the Organisation told GNA an app had been developed in collaboration with World Reader to make available 100 free ‘E’ books for pupils and students.
Teachers also receive weekly messages to help them deal with stress and anxiety arising from the lockdown.
