Gomoa Potsin (C/R), Oct 27, GNA-Nana Kwesi Addo II, Gyaasehene of Gomoa Potsin Traditional Area has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to redeem a campaign promise he made during the 2020 election campaign to elevate the district to a Municipality.
At a press conference organised by the District Assembly in partnership with the Traditional Council at Gomoa Potsin, in the Central Region, Nana Addo urged the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to include Gomoa East District on the list of Districts being considered for upgrade.
He observed that the population of the district qualified it to be elevated to a Municipal status to enable it to extend development to some communities that needed projects.
“We are, therefore, reminding you to fulfil your promise before your tenure as President ends, to ensure every community in the traditional area is not left behind in development.”
He used the occasion to advise the electorates to consider their personal development and that of the area and cast their votes for the party that could better their lots.
Nana Addo pledged that Gomoa East would work collectively to maintain the peace and cohesion of the area before, during and after the December 7 polls.
Mr Geoffrey Payin Inkumu, Presiding Member of the Gomoa East District Assembly, earlier expressed appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for creating the district in 2018 and added that the elevation to Municipal status was due.
He said it came to the attention of the district sometime in September this year, that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development had listed 13 districts to be elevated but Gomoa East District was not part.
Justifying why the district should be elevated, the Presiding Member revealed that the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Gomoa East with more than 309,000 population among 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Country, was ranked fourth.
” If the Gomoa East District population qualifies its elevation, we see no reason it was not included in the list,” Mr Inkumu said.
According to him, apart from the population, Gomoa East District had a large area, stretching from Dampasi, Nyanyano, Gomoa Buduburam, Effutu and beyond with only 12 Assembly members which made work very difficult for it.
He also appealed to the Electoral Commission to create additional Electoral areas to help reduce the huge workload on the Assembly.
“Mr President we the people of Gomoa East are hopeful that you will honour your promise to elevate the district to Municipal status before your term of office ends, for the development in the area”, he added.
