Accra Sept. 24, GNA – Some 39 Democracy Hub protestors who were last week nabbed over acts of lawlessness, have been remanded by two different Circuit Courts in Accra.
A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of an absentee protestor.
The accused persons have been variously charged with conspiracy to commit crime, assault on public officer, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to breach of peace, defacement of public notice and unlawful assembly.
The 39 accused persons have pleaded not guilty.
The Police put them into four groups of nine, ten and twelve persons.
They were marched to the two courts in the company of armed police officers.
The accused persons are expected to reappear on October 8, 2024.
The three-day protest sought to halt illegal mining in the country.
They were picked up by the Police at the 37 roundabout in Accra where they had staged the protest.
They were also accused of defacing political party paraphernalia during the protest.
The campaign against illegal mining has been topical recently following a statement from the Ghana Water Company Limited warning that should such activities continue to pollute rivers in the country, the Company would be unable to provide potable water for the citizenry.
