SWIDA-Ghana holds career job fair, mentorship training for young women

Tamale, Aug 31, GNA – Three hundred and fifty young women, and entrepreneurs in the Northern Region have participated in a two-day career and job fair mentorship training workshop in Tamale to equip them with skills for employment and other business opportunities. 

The fair, which involved exhibition of products, panel discussion, speed mentoring, curriculum vitae preparations and networking, brought together human resources professionals, successful entrepreneurs, and job recruiters to provide mentorship for graduate students and young women entrepreneurs on successful career and business management skills. 

It was organised by the Savannah Women Integrated Development Agency (SWIDA-Ghana), a non-governmental organisation as part of the implementation of the Advocacy Actions for Women Economic Security and Justice in Agricultural Activities in Northern Ghana project with funding support from the African Women’s Development Fund. 

It was on the theme: “Building Your Foundation for Employment”, and was in partnership with the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Management of the Tamale Technical University, Northern Regional Directorate of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), National Service Scheme, and Samakose among other partners. 

Hajia Alima Sagito-Saeed, Executive Director of SWIDA-Ghana, speaking during the event, said it was to secure women’s economic rights and enhance their resilience against issues of gender-based violence. 

She said it was also to provide the platform where young people could build a strong and solid foundation that would enable them to overcome obstacles related to business and career development and to embrace opportunities that ensured their active participation and involvement in the development processes of the country. 

She gave assurance of continuing to engage and network with participants and other organisations to facilitate the creation of more sustainable employment opportunities in the region. 

She encouraged participants to take advantage of the training to enable them to become successful entrepreneurs and employees who would contribute meaningfully to the overall development of their communities. 

Hajia Falila Sulemana, Deputy Registrar, Tamale Technical University, underscored need for beneficiaries to embrace self-improvement, continuous professional development, determination and commitment to excellence to enable them to remain resourceful and relevant in the working environment. 

Alhaji Ibrahim Taimako, Chief Executive Officer of Business College International, took participants through successful resume writing and interview preparation to enable them to attract the right jobs and business opportunities. 

He urged them to embrace the acquisition of skills and technical expertise to meet the expectations of employers. 

Miss Osman Hajara, a graduate of Tamale Technical University, who was a participant, commended SWIDA-Ghana and partners for the training and said it would help them to maximise the various business and employment opportunities in the country.
