Accra, Aug 27, GNA – The launch of the Civic Space Outlook documentary is scheduled for August 29, 2024, from 10.00 hours to 13 hours.
This event will bring together influential leaders to examine the current state of civic engagement in Ghana, particularly as the country approaches its elections, with a focus on safeguarding democracy.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said the discussions would provide valuable insights into the trends, drivers, and impacts that shape Ghana’s civic landscape.
One of the speakers would be Joseph Kobla Wemakor, the Executive Director of Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) and the Convener of the Ghana Civil Society Organizations Platform on SDGs (Youth Sub-platform) according to the statement.
Mr. Wemakor is expected to play a significant role, leveraging his extensive experience in activism and civic engagement to highlight the challenges facing the civic space in Ghana and the necessity of collective efforts to uphold citizens’ rights during this crucial electoral period.
Another leader is Mrs Bertha Badu-Agyei, an Editor at the Ghana News Agency, who will share insights on essential role in fostering transparency and enhancing civic engagement during elections in the spheres of the media.
Another is Vera Addo, Programmes Officer at CDD-Ghana,who would present research findings that emphasize the significance of informed citizen participation in a thriving democracy.
Mercy Larbi, Deputy Commissioner at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, will address critical human rights issues and advocate accountability in governance, while Kofi Yeboah, General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association, will discuss the challenges journalists encounter in reporting on civic issues and underscore the vital importance of press freedom.
The event will serve as a crucial platform for dialogue about civic space in Ghana, encouraging collaboration among stakeholders to address pressing challenges and explore collective strategies to protect democracy.
Participants will stress the urgency of unity, sharing experiences, and developing solutions to defend civic rights.
The Civic Space Outlook launch is poised to be a landmark moment for advocates of citizenship rights and freedoms in Ghana.
Organized by Spaces For Change, a non-profit organization focused on integrating human rights into social and economic governance, the event is supported by the Ford Foundation through the Civic Space Resource Hub.
