Sofia Places Third in Best European Cities for Food Lovers Ranking

London, July 21, (BTA/GNA) – The Bulgarian capital of Sofia ranks third оn a list of the best European cities for food lovers, according to a study by the uswitch.com website.

The study was conducted by collecting data from TripAdvisor for a total of 235,000 restaurants (522 in Sofia) on the following variables for each European capital: vegetarian food options, cafes, pubs, fast food, brunch, price average and number of restaurants. An index was then created that calculated a score based on this information, the website explains. The weighted average both for each city and each restaurant was calculated by considering the number of restaurants and reviews, with more weight going to results with more data. The ranking results would be higher if a city has higher ratings and a lower price, the website notes. The cities were ranked using a percent rank.

In the overall ranking of the best European cities for food lovers, Athens is on top of the list, followed by Belgrade and Sofia (with a score of 79.63/100). Tirana, Valletta and Lisbon come in next and then Vilnius, Bratislava, Zagreb and Bucharest round up the top 10.

Sofia is at the top of the ranking of best cafes (with a score of 9.19/10), followed by Bucharest and Athens.

The Bulgarian capital is second behind Skopje when it comes to fast food (with a score of 9.02/10).

Sofia ranks 6th among the best capitals for brunch (with a score of 8.81/10), preceded by Tirana, Athens, Zagreb, Valetta, Lisbon, and followed by Belgrade, Skopje, Prague and Bratislava.

When it comes to some of the other individual variables, Sofia comes in 8th in the ranking (with a 8.68/10 score) for restaurants with vegetarian options, followed by Prague and Riga.

Surprisingly, the city does not show up in the top 10 cheapest capitals for foodies ranking (that list is topped by Skopje, Belgrade and Bratislava). The food price average in Sofia according to the study, is USD 24.51, which is still far from being on the expensive side.
