Rome, July 18, (dpa/GNA) – A new crevasse has opened up in a glacier on the Marmolada, the mountain in north-eastern Italy, where 11 hikers were swept to their deaths earlier this month, the authorities in the autonomous province of Trento reported on Monday.
The alarm was initially raised by a hut guard on the mountain, the highest peak in the Dolomites, who heard a loud rumbling.
The area was then checked from the air, and a video released on Sunday showed a crack measuring some 200 metres in length and between 25 metres and 35 metres in width.
The popular hiking area has been closed since the avalanche on July 3, when ice, snow and rocks unexpectedly broke free.
The avalanche came after unusually warm weather in the region and has also been attributed to global warming. The mountain authorities are now monitoring the region closely.
