MCE pledges award packages for best schools in tree planting

Accra, June 12, GNA- Mrs Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for La Nkwantanang Madina, has pledged award packages for best schools in the Municipality’s tree planting exercise this year.

She said the criteria would be based on schools, which were able to nurture their trees to maturity with all trees surviving in the subsequent year.

Mrs Adjabeng made the pledge during the second edition of the Green Ghana Day.

The day established on June 11, 2021 is an initiative under the leadership of the President and formed part of Government’s aggressive afforestation programme.

The tree-planting exercise forms part of measures to minimise the impact of climate change and its harmful effects on human population globally.

This year’s celebration is on the theme: “Mobilising for a Greener Future,” with a target to plant at least 20 million tree seedlings across the country.

The MCE encouraged the public to avail themselves to support the Government’s vision to sustain and preserve the environment.

Mrs Adjabeng urged the schools to make tree planting a major part of their extra- curricular activities.

“Trees should not just be planted but should be given full attention till its maturity,” she added.

Mr Bonti Seth Attah, the Head teacher of Cluster Resource Centre, assured the MCE of the commitment of the School to mainstream tree planting as a practice that would stay with the School.

He appealed to Government to fence the School compound to prevent encroachment and enhance security.

Madam Antoinette Enyonam Amegbletor, Director of Parks and Gardens, said the exercise, which took place in the 15 electoral areas was highly successful.

She said about 10,000 trees were planted across the Municipality.

The Director called on individuals and organisations who had spaces at their premises to go for more seedlings for planting.

“The exercise is a process and not an event,” she said.

The exercise brought together schools, churches, Non-Governmental Organizations, Assembly Staff and the public.

Among the MCE’s entourage were Mr. Kwaku Ohene Gyan and Mr Paul Appiah Owusu, Deputy Executive Director in charge of Operations, and Director in charge of Administration respectively at the National Service Secretariat.
