Goshen Global Vision engages students in tree planting

Sekondi, June 04, GNA- Pupils of the Boundary Road Methodist Basic school have planted distinct species of tree crops to mark World Environment Day.

The exercise organised by the Goshen Global Vision with funding from the U.S. Forest Services was also to expose the students to the need to protect the environment by planting more tree as climate change adaptation measures and restore the tree cover and provide shade for the young ones to play, to act as a wind break, and to prevent further erosion.

Ms. Mary Pepertual Kwakuyi, the Executive Director of the Environmentally minded NGO said the exercise in the Twin-city would restore the tree cover under the flagship project, “GREENING SEKONDI-TAKORADI”.

The project since 2020 had planted and nurtured 20,000 trees in Sekondi- Takoradi and 290,000 timber species in cocoa farms and forest reserves in the Western Region.

She said the youth have been chosen as stewards to transform the current state of degradation and maintain a sustainable environment in Sekondi-Takoradi and Ghana as a whole, adding that it was against that premise that “we are celebrating this day with our young ones in Wesley Methodist.”

Ms. Elizabeth Boateng, the Headmistress of the School was grateful that their school had been selected for the exercise and promised to supervise the children to see the growth of the species.
